Whether you have your own children or not, we believe most women mother! Whether a mom, stepmom, daughter, sister, aunt, or an Auntie Mame. like my great friend, Lynn. If you’re a woman, you’re to be celebrated this weekend!
It’s so great that greeting card companies figured this out! This year, I saw numerous cards for women who mother others–who just may not have borne them. After all, doesn’t mothering mean taking care of others? Loving. Nurturing. Influencing. Protecting, Honoring. Supporting.
Ah, that’s the best part of female friendship. Women supporting women means we are the ones who root for other women–be they female family members, friends, acquaintances, co-workers, or our leaders.
And caring for others doesn’t have to be complicated. We can do that with a smile, a compliment, or by taking a moment to tell someone how great they make you feel. A call, text or comment on social media are all simple gestures that take minimal time and produce great rewards.
On the train from San Diego to Los Angeles on the way to give a talk on our book “Women I Want to Grow Old With,” I let the woman in front of me know how much I liked her sweater. She smiled and gave me a compliment back. In that moment, we cared for each other. We shared a smile and made each other feel great!
I said we should be friends and she agreed! So as I got off the train, I handed her my card with my phone number. She asked me if I liked wine and my answer sealed the deal. I trust she will call!
So, this Mother’s Day, if you’re fortunate to have your Mother still with you, call or see her! And, take a moment to call, text, email or reach out to all the women in your life who have contributed to making you the wonderful person you are!
Then, enjoy the smiles and warm wishes in return!
