Powerful Friendships Year After Year

The ancient Babylonians began the idea of New Year’s resolutions as a way to start the year off with a clean slate by returning borrowed items. When we think of it, a clean slate allows us to write, draw or create anything newly. Starting the year off with the opportunity of creating our friendships newly is a very powerful beginning.

Traditional New Year’s resolutions include some attention to health and to wealth in the upcoming year. What if we applied this same area to our friendships? What if we focused on an area of health in our relationships? Would examining the idea of wealth in our girlfriend pool open up some new opportunities and ways of thinking?

This time of year I like to take inventory of my female friendships by asking myself questions like:

  • Which friends need tending and special care?
  • Who have I promised to coffee/lunch with and haven’t put a date into the calendar?
  • Where have I not expressed gratitude in my friendships?

This simple inquiry gives way to action steps that I can take to strengthen relationships in the New Year. My most successful step is to send an email or leave a personal message of appreciation and expressing the desire to talk/meet in the upcoming month. I know there are many other actions I can take but launching this step puts the relationship ball in motion.

Creating Friendship Health and Friendship Wealth in 2012 is not only an interesting perspective but a way of sustaining intimacy with the Women We Want to Grow Old With. What could be possible in 2013? We’d love to hear your thoughts to share with women like yourself who care about this conversation for intentional friendship.

Happy New Year!

Margaret
