Whether going for a few hours, the entire day, or a long weekend, getting away to the spa with a girlfriend is a great way to relax with little distraction. The beauty of a spa retreat with a friend is that cell phones are frowned upon and there are plenty of wonderfully delicious things to do
to keep you from texting, emailing, or engaging on social media.

We all need a break from our digital and real worlds. Recently I had two great but different spa experiences — one with a really close friend and another with my sister. My friend, Leslie, and I have been friends since fifth grade. Our birthdays just two weeks apart, so we treated ourselves to a few days at the spa for some “Birthday Solace”. Neither of us had ever done this before but between yoga classes, a few treatments, and time by the pool to read, we drank in peace and the beauty of the serene surroundings.

In the relaxation room, I noticed five women in their thirties cocooning in large bathrobes and lounging in chairs as they waited to be called to their respite facial or massage. They just hung out, laughing, sipping wine and enjoying their time together without kids or co-workers beckoning them.

The great thing about the spa is you can look your worst and feel your best. Oil in your hair–who cares? No make-up, all the better. It’s there, in a world that seems far away, that you might actually pick up a magazine, hold it in your hands, and leaf through the pages. It’s there that the snacks are
healthy, the water floating with cucumbers, and the steam room warm and otherworldly.

Even if you don’t want to invest in a treatment, some spas allow patrons to come for the day just to use the amenities. That alone is worth the price of admission. It’s the one-on-one or one-on-many time you get with your girlfriends that’s the most soul-filling of all. In the spa, problems are solved, plans made, and new perspective gained. Life just looks better when you head out refreshed and ready for your real
life. An added plus is the fun of planning and the excitement of anticipation.
So make it happen! Save your coins and indulge! The few stolen hours are so worth the payback of renewing our senses and our minds!
