A few weeks ago, I had breakfast with Denise, a woman I knew from high school who happened to work for my organization yet in a completely different division. We both live in the San Francisco Bay Area after growing up “down south” in San Diego. We’d see each other once before a few years ago and had friended each other on Facebook.
During that first lunch, we both never imagined the similarities of certain circumstances we’ve faced in our lives. As we sat talking over oatmeal and muffins this time, it became apparent once again that women have a special knack of connecting on a soul level. Denise and I bonded with each other in a way that can happen when you suddenly know you are not alone. When you get that sense of peace that someone else has faced a similar trial, knows your heart, and has experienced the triumph you’re waiting for.
What my old new friend gave to me that day was understanding – and sought-after advice. I bounced an idea off of her, and she used her experience to help me analyze my options. When I told her what I was thinking, she responded with, “I think it’s okay,” and then she clearly explained why with the insight, understanding, and love that only another woman who has been there and done that can give you. I hope I left Denise with a sense that someone else knows where she’s been in a visceral way – and can appreciate how far she’s come and the wisdom she’s sharing with others.
The two of us may not see each other as often as we might like – since she lives 50 miles away and has taken a new job nearer her home. But that special breakfast will always call me back to her…to reach out via Facebook or email and say, “Let’s do it again. Let’s not let time or distance or the fact that we were high school friends with years gone by get in the way. This type of sharing and caring is a special gift between two women walking on a similar path.
Here’s to well-worn in and brand new woman-to-woman connections. Don’t let anything deter you from reaching out, making a commitment to meet or talk…and then let divine intervention take over to provide you both an unexpected and rich blessings!
Thank you, my friend!
